Dhanteras Puja

Dhanteras, also known as Dhantrayodashi or Dhanatrayodashi, is the auspicious first day of the five-day Diwali festival and one of the most celebrated occasions in the Hindu calendar. The name is drawn from two Sanskrit words: Dhan (wealth) and Teras (the thirteenth day), reflecting its observance on the thirteenth day of Krishna Paksha (the dark fortnight) in the month of Kartik. On this sacred evening, three powerful deities are invoked together in a single puja: Goddess Lakshmi (the Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity), Lord Kubera (the divine Treasurer of the Gods), and Lord Dhanvantari (the celestial Physician and the Father of Ayurveda). This rare and blessed convergence of wealth, wisdom, and wellbeing makes Dhanteras one of the most spiritually potent evenings of the entire year. Whether you are a homeowner welcoming abundance, a business owner seeking prosperity, or a family honoring tradition, Dhanteras Puja is the divine gateway to inviting Goddess Lakshmi's grace into your life.

The Sacred Stories Behind Dhanteras

As narrated in the Vishnu Purana, when the Devas and Asuras together churned the great cosmic ocean, the Samudra Manthan, seeking the nectar of immortality (Amrit), two divine beings emerged from its depths on the thirteenth day of Kartik:

Goddess Lakshmi, radiant with grace, rose from the ocean bearing prosperity, abundance, and fortune for all creation. And Lord Dhanvantari, the divine incarnation of Lord Vishnu, emerged carrying the sacred pot of Amrit (Amrita Kalasha), bringing with him the sacred science of Ayurveda: the gift of health and long life to humanity. This is why Dhanteras is also observed as Dhanvantari Jayanti, the birth anniversary of the God of Ayurveda, and why the Government of India officially marks this day as National Ayurveda Day.

Another beloved story tells of a sixteen-year-old prince, son of King Hima, whose horoscope predicted death by snakebite on the fourth night of his marriage. His devoted bride, determined to protect him, kept him awake through the night by recounting stories and singing devotional songs. She placed all her gold and silver ornaments in a magnificent heap at the entrance of their chamber and lit countless lamps. When Yama, the God of Death, arrived in the form of a serpent, he was utterly dazzled by the brilliance of the jewels and the lamps and retreated without claiming the prince's life.

From this act of love and light was born the tradition of Yama Deepa Daan: the ritual of lighting thirteen earthen lamps at the threshold of the home to seek Yama's protection against untimely death for all family members.
