Govardhan Puja

Govardhan Puja, also celebrated as Annakut Puja or Annakoot Mahotsav, is one of the most beloved festivals in the Hindu calendar. Observed on the fourth day of Diwali, the Shukla Paksha Pratipada (first day of the waxing moon) in the sacred month of Kartik, this festival commemorates one of Lord Krishna's most celebrated divine acts: lifting the mighty Govardhan Hill on His little finger to protect the residents of Braj from the wrath of Lord Indra. The word Annakut means "mountain of food": a joyful offering of abundance and gratitude to Lord Krishna and to Mother Nature herself. It is a festival that reminds us that true devotion, humility, and harmony with nature are the cornerstones of a blessed life.

The Sacred Story Behind Govardhan Puja

As narrated in the Bhagavata Purana and Vishnu Purana, the villagers of Vrindavan worshipped Lord Indra every year to ensure timely rainfall and fertile harvests. Young Lord Krishna, in His divine wisdom, questioned this tradition and encouraged the people of Braj to instead worship Govardhan Hill, which truly sustained their cows, crops, and livelihoods with its fresh grass, water, and herbs.

Angered by this, Lord Indra unleashed torrential storms on Braj. In response, Lord Krishna lifted the entire Govardhan Hill on His little finger, providing shelter to the entire village and all their cattle for seven days,  until Indra's pride was broken and he bowed in submission. Lord Indra himself then performed the Abhishekam of Krishna with the celestial cow Surabhi, glorifying Him as Govinda: the protector of cows and the provider of all prosperity.

Since that miraculous day, devotees across India have celebrated Govardhan Puja every year as an act of deep gratitude, surrender, and faith in the Supreme Lord.
